IPTV vs Cable: An Honest Cost Comparison for US Households

On price alone, IPTV is far cheaper than cable. A typical US cable TV package costs around $80 to $120 a month, or $960 to $1,440 a year, while an IPTV Rapid 12-month plan for one device costs $59.99 for the whole year. Cable still has advantages in predictability and simplicity, so the right choice depends on how much you value those against the savings.

What does cable really cost?

The advertised price of a cable package is rarely the price you pay. A monthly bill in the $80 to $120 range is common once you include the pieces that get added on top of the base package:

  • Set-top box rental for each TV
  • DVR service fees
  • Broadcast TV and regional sports surcharges
  • Taxes and local fees
  • Price increases when an introductory rate ends, often after 12 months

Your own bill may be higher or lower depending on where you live and which tier you have. The quickest way to compare fairly is to take your actual monthly cable TV total (not including internet) and multiply by 12.

What does IPTV Rapid cost?

All IPTV Rapid plans are prepaid, with no box rental and no add-on fees. Here are the single-device prices:

  • 1 month: $12.99
  • 3 months: $34.99 (about $11.66 per month)
  • 6 months: $49.99 (about $8.33 per month)
  • 12 months: $59.99 (about $5.00 per month, our best value)
  • 24 months: $99.99 (about $4.17 per month)

Every plan includes the same content: 25,000+ live channels, 60,000+ movies and series, the EPG guide and catch-up on many channels. Full details and the multi-device and lifetime options are on the pricing page.

IPTV vs cable: the yearly numbers

Cable at $120/month$120.00$1,440.00Usually 1 box included, extra boxes cost more

IPTV Rapid, 3 devices, 12 monthsAbout $12.08$144.993 simultaneous streams
IPTV Rapid, 5 devices, 12 monthsAbout $19.17$229.995 simultaneous streams

Even a household that needs five screens at once pays $229.99 a year, compared with $960 or more for a single cable package. The 4-device plan sits in between at $189.99 for 12 months.

What costs do you keep when switching?

To be fair to cable, a few costs do not disappear when you switch:

  • Home internet. You need broadband for IPTV. Most households already pay for it, but if your current internet is bundled with cable TV, check what the internet-only price will be. Some bundles make internet more expensive once TV is removed.
  • A streaming device for older TVs. If a TV is not "smart", you will need something like a Firestick. That is a one-off purchase, not a monthly rental.
  • Player app licences. Some premium player apps charge a small one-time or yearly fee. Free options exist too. Our guide to the best IPTV apps covers this.
  • A possible internet upgrade. If several people stream 4K at once, you may need a faster plan. Our internet speed guide helps you work out whether you do.

Where cable still wins

Being honest about this matters, because the cheaper option is not automatically the right one for everyone.

  • Independence from your broadband. Cable TV keeps working when your internet is slow. IPTV quality depends on your connection.
  • Simplicity. Cable is one remote and one box with no apps to set up. IPTV needs about 15 minutes of setup per device the first time.
  • Local channels and DVR. Cable includes local broadcast channels and a provider-managed DVR. With IPTV, availability depends on the lineup, and recording depends on your app.
  • Familiarity. For less technical family members, the cable box may simply be easier.

Where IPTV wins

  • Price, by a wide margin, as the table shows.
  • No contract or equipment rental. Prepaid plans from one month, using devices you already own.
  • A bigger library. A large live lineup plus 60,000+ on-demand movies and series in the same app.
  • Watch anywhere you have internet, on phones, tablets and computers as well as TVs.
  • Catch-up on many channels without needing a DVR box.

A worked example: a family of four

Take a household paying $100 a month for cable TV, with a living-room TV, a bedroom TV and two teenagers who mostly watch on phones and tablets. On a typical evening, three screens are in use at the same time. Over a year, cable costs that family $1,200, before any mid-year price increase.

On IPTV, the 3-device 12-month plan costs $144.99. If the family already has a Smart TV in the living room and buys one streaming stick for the bedroom, the first-year cost is the plan plus that one-off device. Even after adding it, the difference runs to roughly a thousand dollars in the first year, and more in the second year when the device is already paid for. The catch is that their internet needs to carry three streams at once, which means around 40 to 55 Mbps of real, measured speed depending on picture quality.

How to decide

  1. Write down your real monthly cable TV cost from a recent bill.
  2. Count how many screens are used at the same time on a typical evening.
  3. Check that your internet speed covers those screens with some room to spare.
  4. Run IPTV alongside cable for a day using the 24-hour free trial, and compare on your own TVs.
  5. If it works well, cancel cable at the end of your billing cycle, after checking any contract terms.

Frequently asked questions

With a cable bill of $80 to $120 a month, a single-device 12-month IPTV Rapid plan at $59.99 saves roughly $900 to $1,380 a year. Your actual savings depend on your current bill and how many screens you need.

Yes. IPTV runs over your home internet. If your internet is bundled with cable TV, check the internet-only price before cancelling.

Cable is more predictable because it does not depend on your broadband. IPTV can be very stable on a good connection, which is why testing it at home with a trial is worthwhile.
